Fishing in Belize is spectacular along the entire coast of the country! The estuaries, inlets and mouths to the many rivers are known for their tarpon, snook and jacks. The lagoons and grass flats are known for the bonefish, permit and barracuda. The coral reefs support grouper, snapper, jacks and barracuda, and the deeper waters are home to sailfish, marlin, bonito and pompano. With its extensive flats, perfect conditions, and easy accessibility, Ambergris Caye is the perfect spot for fishing Belize!
Once you get past the beautiful reefs of Belize, you’ll be greeted by a variety of big game species that rival any of the hottest deep sea fishing destinations in the Western Hemisphere. You can start trolling for sailfish right along the drop-off, or go out a bit further and have a go at marlin or blackfin tuna. The familiar offshore lineup of wahoo, mahi mahi, and swordfish are all here, too.
You can find most big game fish as deep as 650 feet, and getting to the hot spots usually takes no longer than half an hour. These waters have seen some big catches over the years and are home to many annual fishing tournaments. The deep blue water is just miles from Ambergris Caye!
Ambergris Caye, Belize is the anglers’ ultimate dream – a glorious trifecta of bonefish, tarpon and permit! Belize’s shallow water contains the only classic tarpon flats outside of South Florida. Our flats are world renowned for offering the year-round opportunity to sight cast to tarpon. Fish from the boat, or wade into the prevalent flats located all around Ambergris Caye.
Eager to take a fly, the bonefish are plentiful, and permit are found on both the bonefish and tarpon flats. Barracuda can be taken by sight casting on the flats, and wading anglers can find success with snappers and jacks along the reef by casting deceiver patterns or poppers into the surf.
Always bringing action, reef fishing is the most popular fishing excursion for visitors of Ambergris Caye. You’re almost guaranteed a nice catch, and the local guides love to share their secret spots for success! Most of the fishing is done inside the reef and throughout the channels. Snapper, barracuda, jacks and grouper are some of the most common catches on a reef fishing day trip.
Reef fishing can be booked for a full or half day, and the calmer waters inside the reef make it a perfect family-friendly outing on the water. After a successful catch, many local restaurants will prepare and cook your catch, along with delicious local Belizean side dishes.
