Scuba Diving in Belize

Ambergris Caye Diving Tours

Our tiny country of Belize offers a wealth of dive options, from amazing encounters with whale sharks and dolphins to sublime dives on coral atolls.

Belize scuba diving is varied enough to please everyone from novices to seasoned divers. You’ll find an abundance of coral gardens, sponges, reef sharks, rays, and small reef fish. The calm waters offer visibility up to 150 ft, several canyons, swim-throughs and the reef cuts are teeming with abundant colorful sea life. The best scuba diving in Belize is found on the surrounding cayes, and no dive trip to Belize would be complete without a visit to the Blue Hole, or at least Jacques Cousteau thought so!

Blue Hole Belize

The Belize Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. The hole is circular in shape and lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70km from the mainland. Its beauty and many mysteries make it one of the most desirable dives in the world. Common sightings like reef sharks, turtles, and giant corals lead to uncommon sightings as you venture deeper…

At the bottom of the Belize Blue Hole, stalactites hint at the cave’s past lives. Scientists believe the structures were formed in a dry cavern above sea level during glacial periods. The Discovery Channel ranked the Great Blue Hole as #1 on its list of “The 10 Most Amazing Places on Earth.”

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley is approximately 4 miles South of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. It’s by far the most popular day trip from San Pedro, perfect for snorkeling or diving. The appeal stems from the large amount of fish life found with the Hol Chan “cut,” followed by the excitement and novelty of swimming with large groups of nurse sharks and stingrays!

Declared the first marine park in the entire country of Belize, this area has been zoned as a protected area. Due to this, what was once a depleted fishing area has now been allowed to re-generate, producing to divers and snorkelers alike quite a colorful and varied fish spectacle!

Turneffe Atoll

Belize’s atolls consistently rank among the world’s top dive locations, and Turneffe Flats is ideally located to take advantage of the country’s very best scuba diving. As the largest and most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean, Turneffe offers spectacular diving via dramatic underwater features, including spur-and-groove formations, sandy ledges, and sheer walls.

While diving the Turneffe Atoll, you’ll see a variety of hard and soft corals as well as all of the Caribbean tropicals, eagle rays, sharks, turtles, dolphins, moray eels, and large schools of permit, horse-eye jacks and dog snapper. Turneffe Atoll provides spectacular diving for every ability level.
